Dr Roger O'Sullivan, CARDI; Dr Maria Pierce, Trinity College; Prof Davis Coakley, Co-Chair CARDIThis discussion paper gives a detailed assessment of current theories of ageing. It discusses how ageing was previously, and is currently, viewed in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It also examines two major policy areas relevant to older people-pensions and long-term care-through the lenses of various social policy theories of ageing. It aims to draw attention to and encourage discussion on the relevance of theoretical debates on ageing for those stakeholders involved in the process of formulating and developing policies for older people.
