The Financial Abuse of Older People - CAP briefings
(CPA) welcomed the Prevalence Survey Report on elder abuse published in June 2007 by Kings College, London and the National Centre for Social Research on behalf of Comic Relief and the Department of Health. The survey contributes a valuable insight into the types of abuse that older people living in their own homes are subjected to. The study analysed financial abuse as well as neglect, psychological, sexual, physical and verbal abuse. It confirmed that financial abuse is one of the most prevalent forms of abuse – approximately 57,000 people aged 66 and over have experienced financial abuse in the past year. A major part of the CPA’s work for the past 60 years has been on gathering and presenting ‘evidence’ to better inform research, policy and practice and the Centre has been involved in various pieces of work raising awareness about the issues of abuse.
