Currently available treatments for Alzheimer's disease (acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine) improve cognitive function, but do not slow the long-term progression of this disorder. Despite several attempts with therapies aimed at reducing the brain amyloid load, or that target other pathological mechanisms, no treatment has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease in a phase 3 trial.
