Rural transport for older people in Ireland, North and South – understanding and meeting their needs
This project, funded under Call 1 of CARDI’s Grants Programme and led by Dr Aoife Ahern, University College Dublin, examines the transport needs of vulnerable older people, especially in rural areas. The aim of the project was to establish the current transport needs of older people in rural areas, and how these needs are being addressed. It found that insufficient or inappropriate transport was a key concern for older people in rural areas. Accessing services was identified as a core challenge since, for the most part, public transport only serves village centres and not surrounding rural areas. It also found that inadequate transport systems may lead to a decrease in social activities and increase the potential for isolation and disconnection since – without transport – travel to family and friends was limited.
