Number of Future Centenarians
This research by the Department of Work and Pensions set out to identify the projected number of people alive today who are likely to live to be 100 we have undertaken the following:
• Using the Office for National Statistic’s (ONS) 2008-based Mid-Year Population Projections (UK)1, we calculated the population by age (single year age bands) in 2010.
• We also used the cohort life expectancy2 of individual age years to calculate the probability that someone aged x in 2010 will live to the age of 100.
• These probabilities were multiplied by the population for each individual age band.
• Population projections are also provided for those aged over 100 and those aged over 110 every five years, including 2066 which is the first year the centenarian population is projected to rise above half a million.
