A major new study of end-of-life care for older people in Ireland reveals that that there are very few designated palliative care beds available for patients who need such care. This is despite the fact that the majority of older Irish people die in acute and long-stay settings such as acute hospitals, public extended care units, private nursing homes, voluntary nursing homes and welfare homes.
