The ageing population in the European society is one of the major challenges for the health care sector in the European Union. eHealth and technologies for independent living, such as ´smart houses´, will have a significant impact in addressing some of the needs that will arise as a result of the demographic changes.

The Smart House is a new concept emerged from the information society. It is defined as ´a place where the necessities of the family, in security, control, communications, free time and comfort, environmental integration and accessibility are attended through the convergence of services, infrastructures and equipment´.

The Spanish project PLAMSI (Plataforma Multicanal de Servicios Integrados) is set up for the development of a support system in the Smart House for the independent living elderly. In this project two multichannel platforms of integrated services were developed.

1. A Residential Gateway Platform for an Interactive Digital Television receptor. This device permits communication from the home of the user with tele-operators through video conferences. It will also make a control possible of the elements of the house through television.

2. A Multichannel Digital Switchboard as the server of the applications, on one side it will permit the tele-operators to connect and on the other side the users will be connected through RTB or ADSL.

This project has a large emphasis on interoperability between the different devices in the home, which are open and scalable. The access to the services by the end-user for its monitoring must be easy and intuitive, which makes it important that technologies are applied which are already familiar to the end-user. In the PLAMSI project the television the device used by the end user, offering a new dimension to the Smart Home of the future.

The objective of this project proposal is to run a pilot project at European level in order to implement this system. The prototypes developed by the project PLAMSI will be scaled up to make them applicable to a wide variety of situations corresponding to the prevention and management of elderly living independently. The European dimension of the PLAMSI project or EPLAMSI (European Multichannel Platform of Integrated Services) will address interoperable solutions so it can be easily adapted to local care settings across Europe, responding to the need for cross-border collaboration and European market perspectives. It will be revolutionary in its application of the digital television in the Smart Home.
