This paper discusses the aims, key elements and cost-effectiveness of geriatric medicine in Europe. Some areas in which geriatric medicine has spearheaded developments are presented: acute geriatric medicine; specialist care in the community; nursing home care; care of elderly patients suffering from stroke, falls, delirium, dementia, hip fracture and urinary incontinence; elder abuse; and ethics. The role of geriatric medicine in education and research is described, and recommendations are given.
