The Irish National Dementia Strategy was launched on Wednesday 17 December 2014. The launch honours the commitment in the Programme for Government to develop a national Alzheimer’s and other dementias strategy to increase awareness, ensure timely diagnosis and intervention, and develop enhanced community based services.
The Strategy sets out a number of principles to underpin the provision of care and supports for people with dementia including:

The UN Secretary General’s Synthesis Report on the post-2015 agenda,“The Road to Dignity by 2030: Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives and Protecting the Planet”, includes references to population ageing, data disaggregation by age, non-communicable diseases and universal social protection – as well as numerous explicit references to older people. CARDI has published the 2014 edition of its Picture of Ageing Research in Ireland, North and South publication.
This publication provides an overview of research relating to ageing being carried out in their various third level institutions in Ireland, North and South. It combined these profiles with information about a selection of major collaborative research projects and CARDI’s research funding activities to produce an update of a previous directory published in 2010.

The Health Service Executive (ROI) launched a new national policy aimed at protecting older people and disabled persons from abuse.
Included in this are provisions for sexual abuse, which is said to include, “rape and sexual assault, or sexual acts to which the vulnerable person has not consented, or could not consent, or into which he or she was compelled to consent.”
27th November 2014, Health Service Executive
The Health Service Executive in the Republic of Ireland released its 2015 HSE National Service Delivery Plan on Thursday 27 November 2014. The plan contains some provisions regarding older people and the ageing population including GP care for over 70s and measures to deal with delayed discharge of older people:
27th November 2014, CARDI
Older people in Northern Ireland are three times more likely to be frail than those in the Republic of Ireland, a study by researchers at Trinity College Dublin and Queen’s University Belfast has found. The study also found that women and those from lower socio-economic groups in both countries are more likely to be frail.
The findings of the study led by Dr Matthew O’Connell (TCD) and funded by CARDI, are based on analysis of data from the Health Survey Northern Ireland and the first wave of data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA).
