Application Restrictions:

The Translational Research Award (TRA) joint initiative aims to support the research funding strategy of both the HRB and SFI (HRB-SFI). The initiative will focus resources in areas which offer the greatest potential for translation into impacts and benefits for health and long term economic development, as well as for more efficient and effective collaboration between academics and healthcare professionals engaged in translational research. 

In keeping with the strategic goals of HRB and SFI, these awards will fund investigator-driven research projects with clear milestones and realistic deliverables.

What are the objectives of the call?

The objectives of TRA 2010 are to:  

support internationally competitive and innovative research that is specifically concerned with the application of basic research findings into innovative strategies, devices, products or services for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of human disease.

  • support excellence in research as measured by international merit review.
  • promote new, and strengthen existing, partnerships between basic and clinician investigators and between academic and industry/charity sectors to expedite the translation of basic research outputs to the clinic and marketplace.
  • lead to improvements in the health and well being of the Irish nation.
  • support milestone-driven projects that are focused on a well defined goal and delivered with efficiency and minimal risk.    

What is the scope of this scheme?

The TRA 2010 is specifically focussed on the following areas of strategic importance:  

  • Patient-Oriented Research
  • Medical devices
  • Diagnostics
  • E-Health

The TRA scheme will focus on early translational research only. Please consult the guidance notes for further details on the scope of this call.    

Who should apply?

Applications to this scheme require the pairing of two lead PIs, including an academic investigator and a clinician investigator, in order to develop the project along the translational research continuum to or towards a clinical application. Successful applicants need to demonstrate an effective transfer of expertise in the direction of bench to bedside. See guidance notes for further details.  

What is the deadline for applications?

Deadline for pre-proposal submission:  26 March 2010, 1pm

Deadline for submission of signature pages:  01 April 2010, 3pm

Call open for full proposal submission:  Mid-late May 2010

Deadline for full proposal submission:  Mid-late June 2010
