A recent article "We've had the third way, now for the third age" by the Institute for Public Policy Research, an independent research centre based in London, looks at how some countries put in place progressive policies and creative responses to making sure older people's wellbeing is taken seriously in society. The article spells out Britain’s demographic reality and the consequences of not planning holistically for an ageing population, including urban design, older people’s access to further education, facilitating phase-out retirement plans, and others. The article calls on governments to see beyond traditional, often negative attitudes that focus on care facilities and pensions. Britain needs to wake up to the reality that there are now more pensioners than children under 16 years of age. The challenge consequently is not just to create and implement strategies but for 'whole scale social development'.
