Objects & Special Interests
Cancer Research UK supports cancer research in two complementary ways: by the award of grants to researchers in universities, medical schools and independent research institutes; and by the support of research in our own institutes and units where the staff are our employees. Cancer Research UK is committed to accelerating development of new treatments, refining diagnosis and improving the quality of life for cancer patients, and to playing its full role, working in partnership with others, to ensure that all prevention opportunities are taken.

Research Strategy

To support the highest quality cancer research across a broad range of activities from understanding the nature of the cellular processes that, when disrupted, cause cells to become cancerous, through to the biology of cancer and its surrounding tisues, to the development and evaluation of new trearments, as well as diagnostic and preventative measures; extending to studies on the epidemiology of the disease and its psychosocial impact on sufferers, as well as studies on educational and communication about aspects of cancer. In all areas Cancer Research UK seeks to support research of the highest international standards and ensure that it is optimally funded. Intramural and extramural research is supported in institutes and university environments. We aim to foster interaction between our researchers and place emphasis on the translation of basic research findings to clinical evaluation and visa versa.
