Vitamin D supplements could help prevent falls among older people, a new study has found.

According to researchers, a daily dose of 17 to 25 mcg of vitamin D day may reduce the risk of falling among older people by up to 19%.

However, the researchers found that doses lower than 17 to 25 mcg did not reduce the risk of falling among older people.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, analysed the results of eight fall prevention trials to assess the effectiveness of vitamin D.

The researchers concluded: “To reduce the risk of falling, a daily intake of at least 17 to 25 mcg supplemental vitamin D is warranted in all individuals aged 65 years and older.

“Higher doses may be even more effective and should be explored in future research to optimise the fall prevention benefit with vitamin D.”
