The Tories have hit the election campaign trail the day after their Scottish manifesto launch by outlining plans to help older people.

UK work and pensions spokeswoman Theresa May outlined Conservative plans to increase the basic state pension by linking it to earnings in 2012.

Ms May was visiting the Edinburgh South target seat, ahead of the 6 May poll.

She also pledged to protect winter fuel payments free bus passes and free TV licences for the over-75s.

Ms May said: "We will also continue to oppose Labour's plans to abolish the Attendance Allowance and the Disability Allowance and we will help pensioners lower their energy bills by giving them insulation measures worth up to £6,500 at no upfront cost, paid for through the savings made on energy bills.

"Government figures show that, under Labour, two million pensioners are living in poverty and one in three pensioners are living in fuel poverty.

"Pensioners need change and a government that respects older people."
