Sir John (Jack) Hermon, former Chief Constable of the RUC, died on Thursday 6th November after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Sir John’s wife, Lady Sylvia Hermon MP, has devoted herself in recent years to caring for her husband, and to charitable work for the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, among other causes.
In February 2008, Lady Hermon opened the Alzheimer’s Research Trust’s Northern Ireland Network Centre in Belfast.
At the time she commented: “Alzheimer’s is such a dreadfully cruel disease. It steals a person’s memory; it steals the personality and steals human dignity. We owe Alzheimer’s sufferers and carers the very best of research to not only deal with its symptoms but find a cure to prevent it in the first place.”
Dr Marie Janson, Director of Development at the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of Sir John’s death. It is tragic that such a sharp mind was blighted by this cruel disease. Lady Hermon delivered a wonderfully moving speech about her husband’s struggle when opening the Alzheimer’s Research Trust Network Centre in Belfast. We are tremendously grateful for her support as we strive to make Alzheimer’s a thing of the past.”
