The People’s Association (PA) of Singapore is a statutory board formed in 1960 to promote community building in the country. Fully aware of the importance of family bonding in the community, it has recently initiated the concept of intergenerational interest groups to provide opportunities for three generations of family members to enjoy various activities together. There are more than four groups already formed in four constituencies, where they meet monthly with instructors or facilitators to pursue specific interests such as learning yoga, cooking, karaoke singing, and teaching each other new languages.

The concept of interest group is unique for providing intimate exchanges between the younger and older generations within a family, such as grandparent and grandchild pairing up to share family recipes with other grandparent-grandchild groups, grandparents learning yoga together with adult children and grandchildren, and learning songs of different generations in karaoke.

The opportunities for both the older and younger members in busy urban families to create time to interact through common activities not only keep each other active through fun together but also deepen family ties. PA plans to extend the intergenerational interest group to all 84 constituencies eventually.
