‘Use it or lose it’ was the message from Ian Robertson, Professor of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin in a presentation about memory and ageing – using one brain cell can trigger 10,000 more into activity.

He was speaking at a CARDI conference at Croke Park, Dublin, showcasing recent research on ageing and older people.
Although memory tended to decline as people got older, many older people retained good memories. This is not just because of keeping their minds active: physical activity can make the brain grow at any age and social networking – even surfing the internet – boosts brain activity.

Professor Robertson gave seven secrets to keeping memory sharp in older age:
·        Aerobic exercise
·        Mental stimulation
·        New learning
·        Reduce stress
·        Keep socially active
·        Healthy diet
·        Think young
