Five Cambridgeshire museums are to launch a Heritage Lottery funded project, ‘Key memories, recollections of my first home’, to help older people, particularly those with dementia.
The touring exhibition includes a replica of a 1950s kitchen cabinet, which, it is hoped, will inspire younger and older people to recall memories of their first homes.
The launch takes place at 2pm, Friday 20th March, at the Farmland Museum in Waterbech.
The project has been welcomed by the UK’s leading dementia research charity, the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, which is based in Great Shelford, near Cambridge.
Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said:
“People with dementia often initially retain memories from many years ago; projects like this can be of great benefit to their quality of life. 6,000 people in Cambridgeshire live with dementia, a number expected to double within a generation.
“Initiatives like this, along with research into new treatments for the condition, offer hope for the future.”
Beverley Hoff of Cambridgeshire County Council’s Community Development Team, who works with the Cambridgeshire Museums Advisory Partnership, said:
“The project has been incredibly successful and rewarding not only achieving but exceeding its expected outcomes. I hope it will be recognised as a great example of a partnership working using funds from the Heritage Lottery.”
Heritage Lottery funding for the project amounted to £37,100. The five Cambridgeshire museums involved are: the Cambridge and County Folk Museum, Ely Museum, Farmland Museum, St Neots Museum, and Wisbech and Fenland Museum.
The project will be opened by Richard Powell OBE, Chairman of the East of England Heritage Lottery Fund Committee.
