Anyone who would like to learn more about Alzheimer's disease and the latest research into the condition is invited to a public meeting in Leeds.

Dementia research charity, the Alzheimer's Research Trust, is holding the meeting at the University of Leeds on Monday to mark World Alzheimer's Day.

The free event, which will feature accessible presentations on the latest research developments from expert scientists, is designed to help anyone who wants to know more about Alzheimer's.

Two new projects at the University of Leeds have stated this month funded by the Alzheimer's Research Trust.

Scientists have been awarded more than £170,000 for studies to investigate amyloid - the toxic protein that builds up in the brain of Alzheimer's patients.

Nigel Hooper, Professor of biochemistry at the University of Leeds who is leading one of the studies, said: "Amyloid is a key player in Alzheimer's disease.

"It builds up in the brain, and is toxic to cells. It can damage nerve cells and cause the symptoms of dementia, like memory loss. We want to find out more about how amyloid is made, so we can find ways to stop it."

Robin Henne, from the Alzheimer's Research Trust, who will be talking at the public meeting, said: "Dementia is becoming an increasing burden on society, affecting not only patients, but also their families, carers and the wider community.

"The public meeting will provide an opportunity for people to find out about the exciting research happening in Leeds and what we are doing to combat dementia.

"We desperately need to fund more research like that happening in Leeds to offer new hope of developing the treatments we need.

"Over 7,500 people in Leeds alone have dementia, and this is a figure forecast to double within a generation. The threat this condition poses to our society is real, and we must support research that will give us answers."

The public event will take place on Monday 10am to 1:30pm. To attend, register by contacting Mrs Pat Hart on 0113 343 4821 or medph@leeds.ac.uk. A light lunch will be provided.

As well as funding research The Alzheimer's Research Trust provides free information on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. For further details call 01223 843899 or visit www.alzheimers-research.org.uk.
