Priority issues for older women in the North West of Ireland are housing, home-based services and opportunities for health, says a new report Levelling Up: Securing Health Improvement by Promoting Social Inclusion, produced by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland and Derry Well Woman.

It sets out a cross border action plan for the North West of Ireland which has the support of the Cross Border Women’s Health Network, which was created in 2005 and now has a broad membership of 43 statutory and voluntary organisations on both sides of the border.
The report, which involved almost 400 people and 60 organisations, was written by Helen McAvoy from IPH and Karen Meehan from Derry Well Woman.
The network is committed to working on a cross border basis to make the North West a place where older people are respected, where they are supported to live independently in their own homes and their health and social needs are met.
It will achieve this through:
• Developing cross border coordination on key housing issues relevant to older people, especially home adaptations and repairs
• Enhancing the provision of home-based health services for older people in border counties
• Creating opportunities for older people to avail of physical and social activities conducive to health and well-being
The network is taking several actions to support this commitment:
• Resources and staff to support cross border access for older people to integrated and  coordinated services providing adaptations to the home will be committed by the Health Services Executive (West), Western Health and Social Care Trust and the Western Health and Social Services Board.
• The same three bodies will explore the feasibility of extending the Wee Jobs Initiative by organising a cross border pilot.
• They will also enhance provision of home-based services for older people through the promotion of the use of telemedicine technology and the development of a seamless cross border Mobile Foot Care service.
Levelling Up was launched in Derry on 21 August 2008. Read it at:
