A five-in-one pill could guard against heart attacks and stroke, new research suggests.

A study in published in The Lancet today (1) shows how healthy people who took a polypill were less likely to suffer heart attacks.

British Heart Foundation cardiac nurse June Davison said: “The polypill concept is not new. This study showed that combining several different drugs into one tablet delivered a similar effect to each drug separately.

"Reductions were seen in both blood pressure and cholesterol. The results suggest that the polypill has the potential to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease.

“We now need further research to examine whether the polypill actually reduces mortality.”
