Plan to promote older people’s access to transport

Northern Ireland The Department for Regional Development in Northern Ireland has published the Action Plan 2010-2012, which seeks to implement the Accessible Transport Strategy. It was developed following public consultation on ways to improve access to public and private transport for older people and people with disabilities.
The Accessible Transport Strategy identified five main barriers for older people and people with disabilities:
· Physical barriers;
· Attitudinal or psychological barriers eg the attitude of transport staff or the concerns of transport users;
· Information needs;
· The type of services needed by older people and people with disabilities;
· Affordability of transport services.
The Action Plan 2010-2012 proposes policies and actions under 29 headings, ranging from legislation to staff training and service improvements.
