Older people lobby the Assembly
Older people converge on Stormont to put their lobbying skills into practice. Watch the video and see how they got on.
NICVA facilitated a Getting to Know the Assembly event with Engage with Age at the Long Gallery, Stormont in January. The aim of the event was to enable a group of 60 older people from South and East Belfast and Strangford to engage with their local MLAs on issues that are important to them.
The event was hosted by the First Minister, Peter Robinson MP MLA and other MLAs attending were:
Simon Hamilton, DUP
Dawn Purvis, PUP
Alex Maskey, Sinn Fein
Anna Lo, Alliance
Wallace Brown, DUP
Michelle McIlveen, DUP
Robin Newton, DUP
Kieran McCarthy, Alliance
Sir Reg Empey, UUP
The three issues that the older people focused on were community safety, poverty and inclusion, and transport and access to services. MLAs had approximately 20 minutes to speak with and listen to each group before rotating to the next group. After the event the older people had an opportunity to talk further to a few of the MLAs over lunch.
Participants reckoned the event was a success and the MLAs agreed to follow up on some of the issues raised.
