The universities are launching the first centre for Alzheimer's research on Tuesday.

Fifteen researchers at Queen's and the University of Ulster have received more than £95,000 to study the causes and treatments of the condition.

Alzheimer's affects more than 16,000 people in Northern Ireland.

Dr Janet Johnston from Queen's said that research into Alzheimer's is very underfunded.

"There are 16,000 people with the disease in Northern Ireland at present, but that number is expected to double in the next 20 years," said Dr Johnston.

"For every £1 spent per patient on Alzheimer's disease research, there's £26 spent per patient on cancer research."
