World Hospice & Palliative Care Day is an annual unified day of action worldwide which offers an opportunity to raise awareness of the value of hospice/palliative care.
It is estimated that 100 million people around the world could benefit from basic palliative care every year. This number is made up of 33 million people dying and their 66 million family members, companions or carers. The number of people who actually receive palliative care is far lower.
Every year, a high-profile individual submits a message of support for World Hospice & Palliative Care Day, which is used to generate international awareness of the event. Such messages have been delivered by Archbishop Desmond Tutu; Mary Robinson; Bono; Elton John and Dame Judi Dench.
This year, Irish actor Gabriel Byrne has lent his support to World Hospice & Palliative Day.
