Driving message home on elderly
Older people across Northern Ireland sent a clear message to society during events organised for Age Awareness Week.
It was organised by the Changing Ageing Partnership (CAP) to celebrate the diversity of older people’s lives, highlighting their contribution to society and to increase awareness and understanding of ageing issues.
This year’s theme of representation challenged attitudes and practices of how older people are portrayed in society through a week-long programme of events across the province. And with Northern Ireland an ageing population — it’s estimated that 38% of people will be over 50 by 2029 — organisers say everyone needs to become involved in fighting for the rights of older people.
Age Awareness Week spokeswoman Anne O’Reilly said: “The fact older people are living longer is something we should be proud of. But living longer does not necessarily equate to living better and older people continue to be under-represented in society.
“According to our research 88% of people believe more should be done to ensure older people in Northern Ireland are represented.”
Ms O’Reilly said it is hoped the effort to challenge the stereotypes faced by the older generation will continue throughout the year and beyond. This will especially be helped by the implementation of an older person’s commissioner after public consultation on the issue was launched by Stormont Junior Ministers Robin Newton and Gerry Kelly on Thursday.
