Irish people with Down Syndrome are living longer but more than half of those aged 60-69 years have Alzheimer's disease.

It means carers, families and professionals working with people with Down Syndrome in sheltered and residential care need to learn how to look after these dementia sufferers.

Next Thursday, the Down Syndrome Centre will be running a one-day seminar, entitled Supporting the Needs of People with Learning Disability and Dementia.

It will feature Diana Kerr, practitioner, researcher and author in the field of dementia and learning disability from the University of Edinburgh.

The seminar will be held at Fitzpatrick's Killiney Castle Hotel in Dublin, from 9.30am to 4.15pm. Attendance costs €95. Details at www.downsyndromecentre.ie or call 661 8000.
