Debate and fun are on the menu for senior citizens at convention
Older people will have their chance to ‘take to the floor’ in more ways than one during Belfast’s annual Senior Citizens’ Convention at the City Hall this month.
Besides getting a chance to air their views to local politicians they will be able to showcase their dance moves during a stay active workshop featuring the latest in new technology.
“It is a bit of fun among the more serious topics we will be looking at,” said Councillor Bernie Kelly, chairwoman of Belfast City Council’s All Party Reference Group for Older People which is backing the convention which is taking place today (Thursday, May 27).
“Our theme is ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ and we are working with the Belfast Healthy Ageing Strategic Partnership because support for the Seniors Convention has been growing year on year,” the councillor said.
“We will be sharing ideas on how to cut isolation and loneliness among older people and how being active can help with that.
“Keeping abreast of new technology is important for older people to stay connected with society and it is a great way to encourage more contact too between the generations.
“Fun is important but there is a serious side to the Seniors Convention with attendees being given unparalleled access to politicians and organisations which can help change their world,” the councillor added.
It will be launched by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Naomi Long, and chaired by Anne O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Age NI.
Brian Barry, chairman of Belfast Healthy Ageing Strategic Partnership said: “The partnership is delighted to work together on the Seniors Convention for 2010.
“The theme of ‘Living Longer, Living Better’ reflects older people’s desire to age well and enjoy their later years.
“We are starting to work in a more joined up way so that services and programmes help older people to stay well for as long as possible.”
