Chancellor Alistair Darling announced an extension of the support provided by tax credits for workers over 60 and also signaled reform of the Default Retirement Age.

Darling said: “For older workers, I want to extend the support provided by tax credits. To make it easier for those over 60 to receive Working Tax Credit, we will reduce the minimum number of hours they need to work to be eligible. And to enable people who want to work longer, we are now consulting on reform of employers’ right to make people retire at 65.We are looking at options which include scrapping the Default Retirement Age, raising it, or giving employees stronger rights.”

He also announced an extension of the enhanced £250 rate of the winter fuel allowance for pensioners for another year.

Responding to Budget 2010, Zoe Anderson, Policy Officer at Access to Benefits (A to B) said: “A2B is disappointed that the basic state pension is not being increased. We would like to see the immediate restoration of the link to earnings. We welcome next month’s increase to pension credit but we are disappointed that this is not paid automatically.”
