On Monday 5th July 2010 a research workshop took place just prior to the British Society of Gerontology Conference at Brunel University. CARDI provided bursaries for three Irish researchers to attend. They were Donna Brown from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust; Attracta Lafferty from the National Centre for the Protection of Older People, University College Dublin and Annalisa Setti from Trinity College Dublin.

The workshop, for early career researchers in ageing, focussed on getting research grants. It was co-sponsored by the NDA, Lifelong Health and Wellbeing and the BSG Emerging Researchers in Ageing group. Speakers included Mary Gilhooly, Janet Lord, Sheila Peace, Chris Phillipson and Christina Victor.

Other participants, including both PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, were drawn from the NDA and LLHW Programmes, and there were also some representatives from Canada. In all, 60 people took part.

There is huge demand for workshops for early career researchers run by Professor Walker as they can be a launch pad for academic careers by doctoral and post-doctoral researchers.

The workshop was part of a pre-conference programme to the British Society of Gerontology (BSG) 2010 conference at Brunel University, London (www.bsg2010brunel.org.uk).
