Age discrimination becoming a universal concern
New reseach indicates that fear of ageism is a non discriminatory concern for both young and old in the UK. In response to Equality and Human Rights Commission research into ‘baby boomers’ expectations of ageism in later life, Michelle Mitchell, Charity Director for Age Concern and Help the Aged stated:
"Baby boomers are quite right to fear ageism, as our own research shows age discrimination is the most common from of prejudice experienced in Britain."
Spokespersons at the launch event highlighted the concern that the current equality bill does not address the national default retirement age or a legally binding commitment to introduce the rules needed to rid the health service and the finical services of age discrimination.
