Age Concern’s Director General‚ Gordon Lishman‚ said:

“One in three older people are still living in fuel poverty despite concerned words from ministers‚ several select committee reports and this morning's announcement by Ofgem.

“Progress remains painfully slow and inadequate. In the meantime‚ older people in fuel poverty are being left out in the cold.

“Ofgem’s announcement shows that some progress has been made towards addressing the unfair prices energy companies charge users of prepayment meters but nothing has yet been done about the larger problem of the overcharging of customers paying by cash or cheque.

“Ofgem itself has said that progress in addressing unfair pricing has been too slow.  Yet there is nothing to prevent energy companies taking action immediately to end unfair pricing‚ including for cash and cheque customers. The Government must also urgently revise its failing fuel poverty strategy – there should be no more excuses for inaction.”
