The Medical Research Council and Wellcome Trust have announced the launch of a £30 million partnership to boost research into neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s.
Rebecca Wood, Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said:
“Dementia poses one of the greatest social and economic challenges to our society. Research is the only long-term solution. This exciting collaboration and much-needed investment offers hope to the 700,000 people in the UK who live with dementia.
“Earlier this week, the Alzheimer’s Research Trust Patron Terry Pratchett warned that we will face a dementia ‘tsunami’ unless we increase research funding now. This radical initiative goes some way towards addressing Terry’s demands.”
Last year the MRC spent just 1% (£6.4m) of its budget on dementia research.
700,000 people in the UK have dementia: a number expected to double within 30 years. The condition costs the economy £17 billion annually.
