The Scottish Government has announced a £1 million funding boost for dementia research, amid concerns that much more funding is required to tackle Scotland’s dementia crisis.

The devolved government will fund a new Dementia Clinical Research Network in Scotland, bringing together leading academics and clinicians.

The UK’s Medical Research Council spends £5.5 million a year on English dementia research, but just £0.2 million in Scotland .

Harriet Millward, Deputy Chief Executive of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, said:

“For too long, Scotland has been short-changed on dementia research. The Medical Research Council spent 27 times more on English dementia research than on Scottish research last year. The Alzheimer’s Research Trust’s £1.5 million investment in Scottish research has been plugging the gap, but we still have to reject most applications from scientists for funds.

“Dementia affects 62,000 people in Scotland, and almost half of all Scots know someone with this cruel condition. The Scottish Government has made a step in the right direction with this £1 million commitment, but much more research is needed if we are to halt Scotland’s dementia epidemic.”
