Call 3: The development of a novel, low-cost intervention games system designed to improve physical and mental wellbeing in older adults

Prof Fiona Newell, TCD; Dr Stuart Ferguson, QUB
Details of project: barriers to healthy ageing include declines in both physical and mental processes (e.g. postural control and cognition). As these processes are inter-connected, this project seeks to develop intervention programmes that train the body and the mind at the same time and are adapted to the needs of older people. Older adults who are prone to falls may suffer from a faulty sensory integration system that cannot be improved by balance training alone. For this reason the intervention programmes will use multi-sensory input (vision, sound and touch) that will require sensory integration in the brain.
Objectives: design and test computer games using low-cost technology (Nintendo Wii) to enable older people to master in a fun way new skills that will improve physical and mental well-being
