Workshop on Intelligent Objects in Assisted Living

The focus of the workshop will be to explore the use of intelligent objects, augmented objects, or smart objects in the development of context aware applications for the purpose of monitoring well-being and supporting independent living. The objects of interest are those commonly found in the home. An intelligent object is a physical object that has the capacity to sense the user and communicate with other objects. These objects allow us to infer something about the user.

Just as sensors embedded in the building fabric can provide context information to support context-aware applications, additional information about a person’s cognitive state and physical capability can be inferred from interactions with familiar objects in the environment. The development of an augmented / intelligent object for supporting assisted living requires a collaborative effort from a number of disciplines; from computer science, and robotics to mechanical and bioengineering engineering and medicine. Other fields such as psychology and sociology are needed to understand the human dimension.

The goal of this workshop is to discuss existing research and future directions related to intelligent objects in Ambient Assisted Living. This includes both theoretical and applied research related to Augmented (Smart) Objects in Ambient Assisted Living. This workshop aims to bring together a community of researchers, designers and practitioners with an interest in augmenting everyday objects for Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). The focus of the workshop will be to explore the use of intelligent objects, augmented objects, or smart objects in the development of context aware applications for the purpose of monitoring well-being and supporting independent living.

The objects of interest are commonly found in the home. Topics of interest include, but not limited to:

·         Sensors for augmenting objects for behavior analysis
·         Methods (manual or automated) for capturing user’s needs (assessing users)
·         Scenarios and applications with commonplace objects
·         Algorithms for context discovery applied to augmented objects
·         Models for augmented objects
·         Middleware – frameworks
·         Issues of relating to usability and acceptance

Interested participants are invited to submit a position paper of up to 4 pages that should either indicate the participants’ interests within the scope of the workshop, or report on preliminary research findings related to “Intelligent objects in Ambient Assisted Living”. We welcome contributions and participation from researchers in the health and social sciences as well as engineers and computer scientists.

This is a half-day workshop to be held at AmI09. The conference dates are 18-21/11/09.
