Transitions in the second half of life: assessing the lasting impact of life events and experiences
Venue: 76 Portland Place, London W1B 1NT
(Lunch will be provided from 13:30-14:30)
The Equality and Human Rights Commission and Age Concern and Help the Aged have joined forces to investigate and develop understanding of the dynamics of inequality over the life course and identify solutions to inequalities in the second half of life. As part of this work, we are running a joint seminar series that is underpinned by new research and think pieces.
Our joint seminar series was launched successfully in June with an examination of the future of ageing. We would like to invite you to join us at our fifth, and final, seminar, which examines the impact of trigger events and lifetime experiences on inequalities and disadvantage in later life.
Inequality and disadvantage may be driven by mid or later life events, such as separation or divorce, bereavement, taking on a caring role or becoming less physically active. To date, most research that examines income and other wellbeing outcomes in later life has focused on the current characteristics of older adults. Far fewer studies have taken into account experiences across the life course. This seminar will present new research, undertaken by Dr Karen Glaser and Dr Deborah Price from King’s College London, which examines the impact of life course events on poverty and social isolation.
Contributions will also be made by other speakers, including Dr Mark Bryan, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Essex, who will speak about life-course events and later-life employment.
The event will be chaired by Baroness Margaret Prosser of Battersea OBE, Deputy Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
As capacity is limited, please let us know as soon as possible if you would like us to reserve a place by phoning Maggie Lucas on 020 8765 7589 or by completing and returning the attached form by 23 October 2009. Further details will be sent out shortly before the seminar.
