Bath University campus is situated on Claverton Down, to the east of Bath. The A4 and A36 roads run through the city; the M4 motorway is approximately 16 kilometres (10 miles) distant. Bath Spa mainline station is on the London Paddington to Bristol line. Very frequent services run to London, a journey of approximately 90 minutes. Bristol, with connections to the Midlands, the North and the South West is usually a 15 minute journey. Taxis are usually available from outside the Railway station or from 'Orange Grove', which is next to the Abbey. This is a special workshop, one in a series to be organised by SPARC to promote the value of scientific ageing-related research for older people and opportunities for further research. The workshop will cover a wide variety of issues concerned with the the development and application of new technology to support and enhance the quality of life of older people.

Outline: The workshop will bring together leading-edge researchers involved with the development of smart home technology, telemedicine, telecare and related technologies who will present some of the latest findings from their research.

SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) is funded by EPSRC and BBSRC which was established in 2005 to extend the previous remit of the EQUAL Network. SPARC is designed specifically to provide a platform, publicity and policy representation for existing researchers and to encourage newcomers into ageing research. A key aspect of its activities is working in partnership with the users of research - older people and those organisations which represent the interests of older people and which provide older people and their carers with services, advice and other support. As well as organising workshops SPARC is providing 34 pump-priming awards to newcomers to ageing research in the fields of design, engineering and biology.

The School for Health at Bath University carries out research and teaching in health, medicine, exercise and sport, making significant contributions to national and international health agendas. In keeping with government initiatives surrounding population health and more general public concerns, the School divides its activities between population health and healthcare and each of these groups, in turn, contain both teaching programmes and research activities.

The School has many and varied research interests and works clsoely with BIME a design and development charity operating in the fields of medicine, health care and assistive technology for disabled people. Its team of electrical and mechanical design engineers work on a large number of projects. These range from technology for people living with dementia to very practical items of daily living equipment. We are able to take an initial idea through to a finished product. Our design philosophy is inclusive and the views of disabled people, carers and professionals are integral to our work. The Institute aims to ensure all successful designs are made available to whomever can benefit. BIME includes an evaluation centre which holds a National Health Service Purchasing and Supply Agency (PASA) contract to evaluate infusion pumps and other medical devices.
