Psycho-oncology public meetings: Understanding the Effects of a Cancer Diagnosis

Event Details: The Irish Cancer Society is delighted to present ‘Understanding the Emotional Effects of Cancer’, a series of public information meetings which will take place the week beginning March 30th, 2009.
The public meetings will take place as follows (please note some dates have been changed)
30th March, Galway
31st March, Limerick
1st April, Wexford
2nd April, Dublin

The meetings, which are sponsored by a grant from Roche Products Ireland Ltd, are aimed at patients, family members and carers, and will offer practical advice on understanding and managing the emotional effects of cancer, from diagnosis stage onwards. The guest speaker is Dr. Shawn Steggles, Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Oncology, Palliative Care and Psychosocial Oncology Division at the University of Alberta in Canada.
Prior to this appointment, Dr. Shawn Steggles was Honorary Research Fellow, Senior Tutor, Department of Psychology, University College Dublin and the Principal Clinical Psychologist for Psycho-Oncology Services at St. Luke’s Hospital, Dublin, Ireland from Jan. 2003 to Jan. 2008. The purpose of this position was “to set up and develop a comprehensive (education, clinical and research) psycho-oncology service, the first of its kind, within the only national referral centre for radiotherapy in Ireland.”
