With people aged 80 plus set to comprise 11.5% of the EU population by 2050, the drive to deliver effective and affordable long term care is an urgent challenge. A 2011 OECD report** financed by the European Commission, predicts that the cost of care in OECD countries could triple in 2050 from the current average of 1.5% of GDP to 4.5%. The demand for long term care is set to double. A comprehensive vision that combines clinical efficacy with cost effectiveness will be vital if Europe is to achieve a sustainable society in 2050.
