Launch of Working Better: the Over 50s, the New Work Generation

25/01/2010 - 10:01

Working Better – the Over-50s – the New Work Generation

Monday 25 January 2010 at Tate Modern London, 11:00am to 12:30pm, followed by lunch.

I am delighted to now formally invite you to the launch of Working Better – the over 50s – the new work generation.

The ageing population has led policy-makers to make extending working lives a high priority. Despite this, stereotypical views about older workers still prevail in the mindset of many employers.

The traditional view of older workers is they naturally look forward to retirement, to downshifting a gear, being free of dependants and having the financial freedom to pursue lifelong hobbies and interests. But is this really the case?

At the launch of this ground-breaking research into employment preferences, aspirations, barriers and solutions for the over 50s, we will publish some startling findings and offer both recommendations and practical solutions for government and employers.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • The Commission's Deputy Chair, Baroness Margaret Prosser of Battersea OBE
  • Angela Eagle MP, Minister of State for Pensions and the Ageing Society  at  the DWP
  • David Frost, Director General at the British Chambers of Commerce.

The launch of our research comes as the government is reviewing the default retirement age of 65. We welcome the review, since forcing people to stand down on grounds of age rather than ability is one of the most blatant forms of discrimination against older people.
