Design of the Built Environment for the Aged Population
By 2050, one third of Europe’s population will be over 60 and the number of people over 80 is expected to have doubled. Both public and private sectors will be forced to take into account the needs of an ageing population. In the construction sector, this will include house builders, road builders, transport providers and urban planners.
Over the last ten years, through the EQUAL, SPARC and NDA Programmes, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has funded a substantial portfolio of research into engineering solutions for extending the quality of life of older people and creating urban infrastructure and environments that are inclusive and accessible to all.
This event will examine these changing needs and what the engineer and associated professions can do to ensure that these needs are met within the built environment.
