Introduction to Pain Management in Palliative Care (1 day)

Aim: To develop nurses knowledge, skills and confidence in assessing and
managing pain in those with advanced illness or chronic pain.
Objectives/learning opportunities:
· Define and classify pain.
· Appreciate the concept of palliative care relative to pain management.
· Demonstrate increased knowledge and skills in accurately assessing pain.
· Become familiar with the essential pain guidelines in order to guide pain
management strategies for those suffering with chronic pain.
· Choose the most relevant evidence based pharmacological methods to
manage pains frequently encountered in palliative care.
· Demonstrate theoretical understanding and technical skills in relation to the safe and appropriate use of syringe drivers (Continuous Subcutaneous Infusions).
Target Audience: Registered nurses working in all health care settings.
Method: Lecture, discussion, group sharing, and practical demonstration.
