-      Abstract  Submission: A 200 word abstract should be submitted by Sunday 28th February 2010 to tine.buffel@vub.ac.be  Contributors will be notified of the outcome of refereeing by  Monday 15th March 2010. Please specify at least 2 keywords describing your submission and select one or more of the sessions listed below that are relevant to your paper. Submitted papers will undergo a double-blind review and accepted papers will be published by Social Sciences Research society.

-      Registration Fee Payment Deadline: April 16, 2010

-      Full Paper Submission: Full papers should be submitted by Monday 31st May 2010.

Session A. Community development

This session invites theoretical and empirical papers dealing with the intersections of development, poverty reduction, citizenship, social- and policy participation. The aim is to discuss these issues against the background of enhancing the quality of social existence for the population, and in particular for disfavored groups in urban, as well as in rural contexts. Topics that could be addressed are:

-      Volunteering, civic engagement

-      Social participation

-      Policy participation

-      Social capital

-      Sustainability and learning communities

-      Regional and urban development

-      Ethnic minorities

Session B. Growing older in context: environmental approaches to ageing

 

Different environmental conditions reveal different ways of growing older. Ageing is a feature not just of individuals, but also of social organization and cultural context. The social context encompasses situational events and opportunities for integration. However, it also contains structural constraints that limit one’s range of possible (inter)actions and choices. ‘Growing older in context’ is intended as a wide-ranging session that focuses on context, space and place-related issues in gerontology. This session invites theoretical and empirical papers dealing with older people’s relationship with the physical and social contexts that shape everyday life. Issues which merit attention can be summarized as follows:

-      Ageing in place

-      Neighbourhood and community studies

-      Age-friendly cities

-      Environmental dependency

-      Social networks

-      Inclusion, exclusion

-      Globalisation

 

Session C. Housing and care for older people

The older population is growing rapidly. One of the most predominant challenges for the future will by housing and care for older people. This session invites theoretical and empirical papers dealing with older people’s housing arrangements, assisted living and nursing home care. Topics that could be addressed are:

-      Housing accessibility

-      Well being in the context of housing arrangements

-      Housing adaptation

-      Housing care

-      Assisted living

-      Nursing home care

-      Nursing home environments

-      ….

Session D:  Education, culture and society

This session includes a broad range of topics relating to the social and cultural context of education, mutual influences between education and social and cultural forces, and the effects of education in society. Equal opportunities in education, social cohesion and dealing with diversity are suitable themes.  The session will also focus specifically on cultural education: from „modes of interaction” (the social of cultural) to „art” (the artistic of cultural).

Topics that could be addressed are, e.g.:

-      Vocational education

-      Inclusion

-      Gender in education

-      Social and cultural capital in education

-      Creative interactions and social practices between participants and artist. Artists as creative mediators

-      The paradigm shift from culture to e-culture and its consequential influence on the creative process of contemporary arts.

-      Education in museums

-      Global citizenship
