Seminar Description
Over the past 30 years, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of children co-residing with grandparents, particularly in the absence of the middle-generation. Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), this research compares the experience of multigenerational co-residence in the United States and the United Kingdom among adults over age 50. Results suggest that extended household arrangements are more common in the U.S. as compared to the U.K. Structural factors affecting the co-residence of grandparents and grandchildren, including health/disability of the grandparent generation, presence of the middle generation, and characteristics of the grandchildren will be discussed.
