Dignity for the Frail Old: International Conference
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
September 2nd-5th 2010, Bergen, Norway
The conference "Dignity for the Frail Old", organised by the Dignity Centre, deals with questions about the future of all European citizens.
Situations often occur in our lives, which makes it difficult or impossible for us to take responsibility for own behaviour; make decisions; or participate in society. Growing very old and frail is such a situation, resulting in increased vulnerability and dependency. Frail older people have a right to receive support and care, and they deserve protection. Dignity and choice should be the foundational principles on which all care provision for frail older people is based.
The aging of society is a fact, which ought to be celebrated, although many commentators see this demographic change as a burden and a risk for European societies. Viewed in this way, Dignity and choice for the frailest citizens are especially endangered and as a consequence the quality of care for frail older people is also at risk.
This raises the question: In what type of society are we going to live in the coming decades? Would you like contribute to answer this question?
The coordination of the Conference Programme has been led by a European network of experts in the fields of palliativ care and care for older people.
The conference has been designed to create a fresh impact and a process to be continued in both national and international networks. and will explore the concept of dignity and dignified care, frailty, human rights and participation, and the meaning of ageing of societies.
The goals of the conference are to;
- describe the current situation and show possibilities for the future
- determine principles for better care of frail older Europeans
By analysing current trends and future needs the objectives of the conference will be achieved through equal and open discussions of the dilemmas and by identifying potential solutions.
Participants will represent different health and social care systems, cultures and beliefs, bringing wide-ranging and extensive expertise and experience.
