Ageing - ensuring research and statistics meet the needs of a changing

27/03/2009 - 00:00

Venue: Church House Conference Centre, Dean’s Yard, Westminster, London SW1P

Following on from the publication of the National Statistician's article on Mortality and Ageing in December 2008, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will be holding a one day seminar focussing on the demographic process of ageing, the social and policy implications of an ageing society and the role of research and statistics on the 27th March 2009.

The ONS has a wide ranging ageing research programme to further understanding of the social and demographic impacts of an ageing population. This seminar has been organised as an opportunity for ONS to present and discuss our current research with stakeholders and ensure that our future ageing work programme continues to address policy needs.

The seminar is targeted particularly at policy makers but is relevant to all working in the area of ageing including researchers, those implementing and delivering policies and those working directly with older people.

Sessions will include an overview of the demographic process of ageing in the UK, issues and questions arising from population ageing and key policies linked with older people. The use of data sources such as the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and the Annual Population Survey (APS) for ageing research will also be examined.

Speakers include representatives from the Department of Work and Pensions, the Oxford Institute of Ageing, the Centre for Population Change and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

Issues raised at the seminar by stakeholders will be taken forward in future work planning to ensure the ONS  ageing research programme continues to address policy needs.

The event will be chaired by Roma Chappell, Deputy Director of the Office for National Statistics, Centre for Demography.
